Lyrics to I sing a Liad für di, a breakthrough hit which is still popular at the Munich Oktoberfest
This popular Oktoberfest tune (whose title means ‘I sing a song for you’ dialect) was a breakthrough hit for Austrian folk singer Andreas Gabalier.
Born November 21, 1984, Gabalier started to get famous in his home country in 2009, and I sing a Liad für di become his first big hit in Germany two years later.
The song stayed in the Austrian charts for a record-breaking 132 weeks and helped him to win the prestigious Amadeus Austrian Music Award in 2012 and again in 2013.
It’s a typically light and poppy song which can easily get stuck in your head if you’re not careful. You've also got to love the music video (below) where Gabalier strides around in those half-socks that keep the calves warm.The translation into English lyrics below might not be perfect, but it’s difficult trying to work out what some of the Austrian words mean! They’re rather different from standard German.
Let’s hope Gabalier still has more where this hit came from.
